ACER PALMATUM - Japanese Maple  - Popular small tree extensively used in landscaping. Upright base with wide rounded head. Soft green foliage. Multi-coloured Autumn tones.
ACER PALMATUM - Bloodgood - Upright small tree which carries deep Marron-Red leaves during the season turning to a more Red Autumn tone.
ACER PALMATUM - Crimson Queen - Weeping Maple with Crimson new growth turning deeper Purple over summer. Autumn tone of Scarlet-Red.

CERCIS CANADENSIS - Eastern Redbud - Forms a small tree with a picturesque bare branch pattern. In early Spring these bare branches are covered with rosy-pink, pea shaped flowers. Mixed Autumn colour.

ACER RUBRUM (gr) - Autumn Blaze - Medium sized tree, ideal feature and amenity tree with striking Autumn colour of Red - Orange - Scarlet. Very popular.
BETULA PENDULA -Silver Birch - Very popular widely planted tree. Graceful tree with rich green foliage and distinctive white bark. Hardy and quick growing. Produces light shade.
FRAXINUS OXYCARPA - "RAYWOODII" - Claret Ash - Round dense tree of rapid growth. Dark green foliage. Used often as a feature tree. The rich Autumn claret colour it is noted for can be somewhat muted in mild climates.
FRAXINUS - Green Glow (P.V.R) - Compact growth forms a bee hive shaped tree. Young growth bronze turning to green.
GINKGO BILOBA - Maidenhair Tree - Has origins from 160 million years ago-longest surviving living thing on earth. Hardy, long lived disease free tree. Fan shaped leaves turn brilliant gold in Autumn. Best in free draining soil.
GLEDITSIA - 'Sunburst' - A thornless form now being widely planted in gardens, streets and parks.Delicate,fern like foliage. New growth yellow but turns to light green as it matures. Very popular as a feature tree.
GLEDITSIA - `Skyline' - An American selection that makes a fine shade or specimen tree. Very upright, pyramid shape enables it to be grown in a confined space. Young growth is tinged yellow, older growth is a light green.
IDESIA POLYCARPA - Wonder tree - Noted for the brilliant show of bright orange-red berries in Winter. This is on female trees only. Large oval leaves. Moderate growth rate.
LIQUIDAMBER - 'Worplesdon' - A richly coloured clone of pyramid growth habit. Noted for red rather than purple Autumn tones. 
LIQUIDAMBER STYRACIFLUA - Sweet Gum - Well known and extremely poplar tree noted for its outstanding Autumn display. Also of value is the reddish-brown timber sold under the name of"satinwalnut".Tolerates coastal conditions
LIRIODENDRON TULIPIFERA - Tulip Tree - A tree of ancient lineage and peculiar square shaped leaves. A very big tree that will grow straight and true to over 35m. Name is from the yellow-green flowers that open in late Spring.
LIRIODENDRON TULIPIFERA FASTIGATA - Upright Tulip tree - An erect columnar variety of Liriodendron that is good for where space is restricted. Same square shaped leaves as standard tree.
MORUS ALBA - White Mulberry - Originates from China where its used extensively for feeding silkworms. An attractive medium sized tree suitable for urban & coastal planting. Pale coloured fruit in Summer eaten mainly by birds.
PHELLODENDRON AMURENSE - Amur Cork Tree - A fast growing, attractive foliaged, graceful, wide spreading, medium sized tree. Aromatic bright green leaves turn golden in Autumn. Clusters of small black berries for birds in April.
PRUNUS AVIUM - Mazzard Cherry - Mass of white spring flowers, Sweet edible cherries in January. Good Red Autumn colouring. Timber sort for cabinet and turning work.
PYRUS CALLERYANA - Chinese Pear - Masses of white flowers in Spring. Noted also for fine red Autumn colour. Thorny branches. Very small,round,brown fruit. 
PYRUS CALLERYANA - 'Awaiti' - Self named, fast growing, mass white flowers in spring, fruit for birds. Compact growth habit, thornless. Makes nice driveway tree etc. 
QUERCUS ROBUR FASTIGATA - Upright oak - Upright compact growth. A very good tree for tight spaces, where spread is restricted makes a nice uniformed avenue.
ULMUS PARVIFOLIA - Chinese Elm - Now in demand in Europe as an excellent street tree and resistant to the elm disease. A smallish rounded tree with very small glossy dark green leaves. Very fast growing and gives few problems. Several line the main street of Cambridge.
ULMUS `FRONTIER' - Frontier Elm - A smallish tree showing resistance to disease and insect attack. Red-purple Autumn colour. Highly regarded for street and park planting.
ULMUS GLABRA - `LUTESCENS' - Golden Elm - A very popular feature tree with golden yellow foliage from Spring to Autumn. A spreading vase shaped tree that grows well in most conditions. Withstands wind, drought and excessive moisture.
ULMUS PROCERA - 'VARIEGATA' - Variegated Elm - A beautiful,slender,straight growing tree. From a distance the leaves appear silvery white giving the whole tree a very light and dainty look.

FARM TREES

ACER NEGUNDO - Box Elder - Rapid growth even in poor soils. Withstands wind well. Golden yellow Autumn tones. Compound leaf-unlike most other Maples.
ACER PSEUDOPLATANUS - Sycamore - No nonsense quick growing, wide spreading tree with dark green leaves Will grow in all soil types, exposed positions, resists salt winds. In Spring, conspicuous long clusters of winged yellowish flowers.
ACER SACCHARINUM - Silver Maple - Large quick growing tree for moist soils - Autumn colours mainly yellow with tones of scarlet & orange. Leaves light green above and silvery-white underneath.
ALNUS ACUMINATA - Andean Alder - A fast growing tree that has ex. Potential for agroforestry,timber & soil conservation. Like other Alders fixes nitrogen. Will also grow in poorer soil types & be of use for windbreaks & shelterbelts.
FRAXINUS OXYCARPA - Desert Ash - At an early age growth is very fast-on good soils probably the fastest of all Ashes. Will also grow in hard,dry,conditions as its name would suggest. Grows to a very large, very impressive tree.
GLEDITSIA TRIACANTHOS - Honey Locust - Faster growing than the thornless variety and good for farm planting Fixes nitrogen as it is a legume and has pods for stock food. Medium sized rounded tree.
PLATANUS - `Autumn Glory' - Our seedling selection - A seedling from `Autumn glory' that was chosen for its superior growing form and more vivid Autumn colour. Grows quickly. 
PLATANUS ORIENTALIS - Oriental Plane - One parent of the London Plane. Does not have the flaking bark of the London Plane or is not so vigorous or so spreading. More deeply cut and lobed leaves is another difference.
PLATANUS x ACERIFOLIA - London Plane - Fast growing tree that obtains grandeur with age. Very large leaves are in keeping with it's eventual large size. Only mild Autumn tones, the colourful pattern of it's flaking bark more than compensates.
QUERCUS (HYBRID) - Wairakei Tree - Appears to be a cross between the Pin and Willow Oak. A medium sized rounded tree. Notable for its brilliant scarlet Autumn colour.
QUERCUS PALUSTRIS - Pin Oak - One of the most popular oaks planted in N.Z. Different forms, but the most common in N.Z. is the even pyramid shape and regular horizontal branching.
QUERCUS ROBUR - English Oak - The mighty oak that has been part of European folk lore and history. A large, spreading, tough, long lived tree, that is still an important European forest tree. Timber hard and durable.
QUERCUS RUBRA - Red Oak - One of the largest N.American oaks that can grow to over 35m. An excellent reddish-brown, close grained timber. Name comes from red Autumn colours.
SALIX KINUYANAGI - Japanese Fodder Willow - Vigorous, multi-stemmed willow useful as a fodder tree. Large narrow leaves are retained well into Autumn. Can yield 10 tonnes of edible dry matter per hectare per year.
SALIX x CHRYSOCOMA - Golden Weeping Willow - A quick growing, medium sized, wide spreading tree. Arching yellow branches are most conspicuous in winter. Hardy and easy to grow in any soil.

WETLANDS

ACER RUBRUM - Red Maple - Very erect fast growing tree with brilliant red Autumn colours. Prefers moist soils and away from strong winds Sought after for ornamental planting.
ACER RUBRUM (gr.) -'October Glory' - A Northern Hemisphere selection. Medium sized tree for heavy ground. Vivid red Autumn colour which holds well into Winter. 
ALNUS GLUTINOSA - Black Alder - Popular tree for shelterbelt planting. Suitable for moist, heavy and peaty soils. Roots not invasive and nitrogen fixing. Fast growing and responds well to trimming.
BETULA NIGRA. - River Birch - An excellent tree for moist soils, river banks or swamp edges. Dark brown peeling bark. Dark green leaves. Denser foliage than most other Birches
LIQUIDAMBER STYRACIFLUA - Sweet Gum - Well known and extremely poplar tree noted for its outstanding Autumn display. Also of value is the reddish-brown timber sold under the name of Satin Walnut.
METASEQUOIA GLYPTOSTROBOIDES - Dawn Redwood - Very few big trees about as it was not found until 1941. Similar to Swamp Cypress but more symmetrical in shape. Orange brown bark, soft light green foliage, rust Autumn colours.
NYSSA SYLVATICA - Tupelo - One tree that prefers to be in moist, acid soils. Medium sized multi branched, slender tree. Brilliant Autumn colours. Dark blue fruit relished by birds.
STYRAX JAPONICA - Snowbell Tree - Attractive small tree, rounded with bushy growth. Small white pendulous flowers hang from undersides of branches in early Summer. Prefers acid soils.
TAXODIUM DISTICHUM - Swamp Cypress - Can be grown in wet, swampy areas where most other trees would perish Soft, feathery fern like foliage in Spring turning to rust-red in Autumn. Very stable and wind firm. Dark timber is extremely durable.

SHELTERBELTS / HEDGING

ALNUS CORDATA - Italian Alder - Attractive fast growing tree being used extensively for shelter- belt planting. Roots not invasive and nitrogen fixing. Very durable timber under water, Venice was built on alders. For average to drier sites.
ALNUS GLUTINOSA - Black Alder - Popular tree for shelterbelt planting. Suitable for moist, heavy and peaty soils. Roots not invasive and nitrogen fixing. Fast growing and responds well to trimming.
CARPINUS BETULUS - Hornbeam - Easily grown tree obtaining character with age. Soft green leaves in spring, turn brown in Autumn and stay on for most of Winter. Wind and salt spray tolerant. Very durable timber,
FAGUS SYLVATICA - Green Beech - Magnificent large, hardy tree with smooth silvery trunk. Gives dense shade. Widely used in Europe for hedging. Leaves turn yellow in Autumn, then brown, and linger for most of Winter.
FAGUS SYLVATICA PURPUREA - Copper Beech - Slow growing, particularly when young, but worth waiting for as it makes a prized specimen tree. Much used by landscapers as a feature tree. Leaf colour can vary a little from tree to tree.
POPULUS - `Kawa'(N Z 5006) - A very fast growing tree that is also better formed than P. yannanensis but with the same attractive features. Moderately susceptible to wind damage. Wood is of a far higher density than most other poplars.
POPULUS - `Veronese'(P N 870) - Fast growing, good form and uniform growth when planted in an avenue. habits growth. Withstands wind well.
POPULUS - `Crows Nest'(N Z 5010) - A fast growing poplar with a very upright growth habit. Will make a more than worthwhile replacement to the old Lombardy type.
POPULUS - 'Shinsei - Fast growing narrow tree, wind tolerant, shows resistance to possums. 
POPULUS YUNNANENSIS - Chinese Poplar - A very fast, easy to grow tree that does well in most soils. Leaves early to emerge and late to fall. Little Autumn colour in mild areas but good yellowing in colder areas.
BUXUS SEMPERVIRENS  - Common Box  - Dense , deep green foliage, Excellent hedge for formal garden. 
FEIJOA  - Sellowiana  - Fast growing seedling, very compact trimmed hedge. Attractive with flowers against grey-green foliage. 
GRISELINIA LITTORALIS  - Very popular shrubby NZ native, large rounded leaves. Makes excellent hedge. 
TEUCRIUM FRUTICANS  - Forms compact bush covered in masses blue-lilac flowers in spring to summer. Trims well to make attractive boarder. Fast growing.
PITTOSPORUM  - Silver Star  - Fine silvery-green leaves with dark red - black stems. Nice compact hedge. 

TIMBER TREES

CASTANEA SATIVA - Sweet Chestnut -Timber resembles Oak but is lighter and easier to work. Used for furniture, coffin boards and domestic ware. While coppiced growth is used for fencing.
JUGLANS HINDSII X REGIA - Hybrid Walnut -
 A very fast growing hybrid Walnut that has the potential as a fine timber tree. Upright growth. Seedlings can show characteristics of both parents. Of little use for nut production.
PAULOWNIA - Elongata - One of the fastest growing trees in N NZ. In favourable conditions over 5m can be obtained in the first years growth. In unfavourable conditions growth is very much reduced. An ex. Tree for agro-forestry.
PAULOWNIA - Fargesii - Very fast growing in the right site. Attractive Foxglove like flowers. Prefers rich free draining soils.
PAULOWNIA - Fortunei - A very fast growing tree with ex. potential for timber and agro- forestry. Seed from China where much research work has been done.

APPLE  - Royal Gala - March. Av sized, Important export variety. Red skin, crisp and sweet.  
APPLE  - Braeburn - March/April. Mild flavour .Keeps well.
APPLE  - Granny Smith - April. One of best known apple varieties. Excellent for cooking and eating. Keeps well. Heavy cropper.
APPLE  - Fuji - April. Large apple with honey like flavour. Vigorous growing tree. 
APPLE  - Rennette du Canada - Late season. Old French variety for both cook and eating. Keeps well. 
APPLE  - Monty's Surprise - April, An old heritage apple found to have far better health benefits than most modern apples. Crisp, good eating and excellent cooking.
APPLE  - Kentish - filbasket (weeping) March / April. Excellent quality cooking apple also good eating. Picked over long period. 
APPLE - Peasgood Nonsuch - Mid season. Very large old fashioned cooking apple. 
APPLE - EASY CARE Laxton's Favourite - January. An `easy care' apple of good sweet eating quality. 
APPLE - EASY CARE Tydemans Late Orange - April. A medium sized ’easy care’ apple, yellowish flesh has rich flavour resembling Cox's Orange which improves with keeping.
APPLE - EASY CARE  Prima - March. A relatively new variety breed in the U.S.A. for scab resistance. Apple is blushed red & slightly tart.

CHERRY  - Tangshe - December. Self pollinating. Produces well in mild climates. Cherries have pale pink skin. 
CHERRY  - Compact Stella - December. Large dark red fruit. Good compact tree for home gardens.  
CHERRY  - Lapins - Late ripening. Large dark-red firm and sweet cherries with good flavour. Good pollinator. Highly split resistant.

CHESTNUT

CHESTNUT 1002 - vigorous, even & av.nut size. A sweet nut. Late season. Grows into vigorous, large spreading tree. Requires free draining soil.
CHESTNUT 1005 - large nuts, part. Self fertile Large nuts. Partly self pollinating. One of main export varieties. Grows into a large spreading tree.
CHESTNUT 1015 - heavy bearer, nuts even size. One of main export cultivars. Nuts of consistent size & quality. Forms a large spreading tree.

NECTARINE - Goldmine -January/February. Old variety with pale yellow flesh and fine flavour. Excellent for all uses

PLUM - Omega -Late season. Dark red skin with red flesh, sweet, dessert, free stone. Heavy cropper.
